How Far Do You Go To Make Your Child Happy???

Posted by Vulnadia on Dec 02, 2009 at 07:56 AM People have been talking about how Katie Holmes allows her tot to wear high heels, but until now, she hasn't made a statement about it. From what she says, it's because her little girl wants to be like Mommie. My kids do very similar things. Over the years, I've humored Bregon changing his name to "Steve" when he was 4 and found his own name atrocious. I've written notes to the school office explaining how, on career day, Bregon will be coming as a Pirate complete with a copy of a paycheck stub gleened from our Entertainment Director at the time, so he could prove to his class and the school that while they may find Piracy a childish and fantasy job-choice, it was in fact very valid and he had the pay-stub to prove it. Several years later, I helped my sister pen a similar note when my niece decided to go as Captain Hook from the Ice Capades/Disney on Ice show she had recently attended. Today, I allow one of my 3yr olds to wear whatever hat he chooses. The other day, he went out with a backpack full of hats just in case he wanted to change into something different. He went from being The Pirate King, to being Santa Claus, and then on to wearing a green fuzzy hat that has meaning only to Kian, all in the space of a few hours. Vivienne has days when she is quite convinced that she is in fact a real Princess with a title, lands to back it up and knights to defend her honor so she must wear her pink Princess dress and pink leather cowgirl boots to accessorize or she just doesn't feel right. Don't worry, Kaiden is very agreeable and wears his knight's helm to back up his sister's claim, no problems there! Do you find yourself allowing your children to do and wear things in public that might cause others to raise an eyebrow? Personally, (& quite obviously) I do allow it. I am one of those crazy Mommies who feels that you are only a child once and that they think in ways that adults cannot possibly and that shouldn't be interefered with at all, in fact it should be fostered and honed and allowed as long as they can possibly want to be that way. So what do you do for your kids? Do you let them go to school in their Batman costumes or go to the grocery store in safari hats? Do you honor their imaginations by calling them the name of their choice for that hour of play?
