Kitty Problems

Okay, ever since we moved into this house over a year ago, I have had trouble with keeping my animals safe and in my yard.
Originally, I purchased an electric fence and collar for each of my pets (I have three cats and a dog, or had anyways.)
We moved in in August, and by October, my neighbors had decided that my fence system was inhumane and as soon as the first set of batteries ran down, they decided to remove the collar from my tiny long haired kitty, Nimue.
This meant that she was no longer safe and sound within the confines of my yard and no longer had access to the room where her food and water was kept.
So, she moved to where food and water was, which was this well-meaning neighbor's garage. Yep, they took my kitty, and even had the nerve to say something about it when we met them while out on a walk one day.
Soon, the next set of batteries ran down, and they were able to catch my big yellow Boris kitty and remove his collar (he had been visiting his mate Nimue at the garage a few yards over while enjoying his few minutes of freedom.)
This would ultimately result in my big yellow kitty getting backed over by yet another neighbor, because none of my kitties had been outside cats until the move which is why I had gone to such lengths to keep them safely within my yard.
We know that my big yellow kitty walked away from the accident, but he hasn't been seen nor heard from since and that was in June. We sometimes think we hear him, and sometimes see a cat that may be him, but if it is, he is too skittish to let anyone near him, so we really don't know.
I really want to discuss the inhumane treatment of my kitties with my neighbors, but they are elderly and I don't think they will understand exactly what they have gone and did by removing these collars from my cats.
Well, this has left me with one very deaf kitty named Caliburn, and my silly doggie Pakita.
Of course, they were able to snag Caliburn's collar sometime in September, even removing and not bothering to replace her ID charm which would identify her as loved and owned. I have spent over $500 dollars trying to keep my animals safe and able to be located if something happened to them, and they undid everything and even kept the collars and discarded the name charms.
I just do no understand these people. But, now my deaf wonder is loose running about the neighborhood. She cannot hear you if you scream in her ear, but she can feel vibrations of things which is why she is still kicking, I suppose.
But, yesterday, something weird happened. I heard barking, and caterwauling (yes everyone is fixed so I knew something was up.)
Then, we heard weird scurrying noises from the fireplace area and then the real crying began. It echoed, too, all throughout the living room.
The source of the noise appears to be the fireplace. The caterwauling/crying noises are Caliburn's Marilee Maitlyn deaf meowing which can send shivers up your spine if you aren't expecting them to sound that way on a good day.
But, to know that she has somehow gotten herself stuck, makes the noise all the more unnerving to everyone.
It has gotten so bad, that my husband actually decided to grab a flashlight, and crawl up underneath our house to see if he could help her out of her predicament.
He couldn't actually see her, and in fact, because of the echo throughout the metal parts of the fireplace, he couldn't even pin down an exact location, although he has some idea of the area.
The reality of the matter is, that she has crawled up under the hearth somehow and managed to get stuck someplace either to one side or behind up under the firebox.
It's a spot that nobody can reach easily, either, not without taking something out to get to it. So, for the moment, she is stuck and we cannot help her.
It got so bad, that my eldest son couldn't take it anymore, and decided to give it a shot and try and free her himself this afternoon while I was out grocery shopping.
He didn't see her, either, but he sure did hear her. He thinks he got close, but hasn't any clue if that is where she is for certain.
So, for now, we wait. We have a major kitty problem, but no idea how to solve it.

i am soo hesitant about all of this-
as i type, my husband is sitting in the fireplace with his circular saw, debating on whether he should go ahead & cut the darn thing open & see if he can get her out-
we cant get to her from underneath...& we really cant leave her up in there...so i dont know what else to do- & he doesnt either- i hope we arent overreacting & doing something rash-but its been a tad bit over 24 hrs that she has been stuck in there- even my 2 yr old knows she is in there & the first thing he did when daddy got home was tell him all about the kitty stuck & point to where she sounds like she is & meow like her...it was soo terribly sad...
hoping this works out...
dunno how to keep the doggie from scratching up the doors- a friend of mine once put my litlte doggie in her bathroom to keep her big dominant doggie from "disciplining" her (which would have involved biting) & when we got home, she had scratched her way thru the 2nd outside layer of the door...scary stuff...
good luck on placing the kitten

okay...
here's the deal- husband took off 2 panels of the fireplace- unscrewed them- only to find that the last few panels are riveted/welded into place & it was a no-go...
yes he actually put it back together immediately, too-
i had him try from the side on the woodbox side (we had boarded it up outside & now use it for our movie collection which is vast)- found it the fireplace is brick all the way around that way...
so, it was back under the house we went- food & water in hand in some attempt to try & entice her out, knowing that if she were hungry enough, she would probably do anything rashly to try & get to the food, even if it didnt feel nice (ie hurt herself a bit more & be driven to get out)- no go....still could hear her, but couldnt get to her no matter what we did-
so, we left the food for her & went back to the drawing board- & firecrackers etc- for some reason everyone had the really huge concussion ones this year, the kind that rock your house & sound industrial...
so we slept on it...hoping all would be well- the next morning (new years day) she was still meowing & crying...only this time we could hear her from a different point under the house! she had somehow made it to the center & was out of the firebox!!!!!
apparently she had gotten lost up in the maze of little cubbies that she found in there & had to work her way back out- not sure if the power tools on the metal did the trick & scared her to find her way out, or if the food did it or what, but by new years afternoon she was back to sunning herself on the trampoline languidly...& she is still somehow white with no smudges.....
so we had a happy ending...just a terrifying 2 or 3 days worth of wonder though!!!!
husband will be patching up the access holes to the fireplace as the only access that can be gained is by tiny fuzzy creatures that we dont want up in there anyways!!!!
& the kitty will live happily ever after!!!!
sorry i didnt get to update-was stuck working for the better part of yesterday & the night w/ a slow puter connection
