Peter Pan & His Shadow

Posted by Vulnadia on Jul 30, 2009 at 01:35 PM J.M. Barrie had this wonderful observation of how interested little children can become with their own shadows. He tells us of how Peter Pan battled with losing his, found it, and felt compelled to sew it in to place so that he could keep better control of it. Last night, one of my tiny trio had his own Peter Pan moment while on the way upstairs to the nursery. Kaiden was straggling behind everyone else in hopes of being allowed outside to say goodnight to Daddy's Truck. He was terribly sad because of the rain keeping him from saying his "Good nights" to it. Husband had turned the hall light on downstairs, but the one in the stairwell is currently in need of changing, so the stairwell remained dark. On the way up, Kai noticed his shadow for the first time (if not the first time in a while of course as children are known to do!) He began to play with his shadow, making his treck upstairs slower and slower. He poked at it, tried to catch it and even played with it for a while, giggling the entire time. He was quite sad to discover that no matter what he did, he could not catch that pesky shadow! Kai did discover, however, that shadows make wonderful playmates and are fabulous at games such as "Simon says!" He liked his shadow soo much, that he insisted that we turn the nursery light OFF even though it was storming like crazy out, just so he could continue playing with his shadow buddy in his crib. It's soo sweet to see my baby boy having a "Peter Pan" moment! No worries, all of the windows have been screwed shut so that nobody escapes to Neverland!
