Exploring The Great Outdoors

Posted by Vulnadia on Nov 19, 2008 at 03:40 PM Last week, something awful happened. In fact, for a few days, I wasn't even sure exactly how it was happening, just that it was! My trio decided that it was time to go exploring out in the great outdoors...ALONE! Last Thursday, I realized that everything was sounding a bit muffled, and that I wasn't hearing the usual play-sounds coming from my living room. I went running in there just in time to find Vivienne negotiating the back porch stairs. I got her back inside easily enough, but I looked up just in time to see Kian go sliding head first through a bunch of wet leaves. He got up laughing, but he was soaked from head to toe, and it was super cold outside! I scooped him up and set him inside with his sister, and went back for Kaiden. He was just about to run underneath the trampoline to try and hide from the doggie who was desperately worried about the fact that he was carrying her very full food bowl around with him! I managed to pry the doggie dish away and save the doggie's dinner from my toddlers. I even managed to get a very dirty, and very barefoot and wet Kaiden inside with his siblings, somehow, without anyone else getting out. Nobody had any shoes on, and the boys were filthy from their excursion and exploring. This called for an impromptu tea-time bath instead of having their afternoon snack, that is! I thought that maybe husband had forgotten to lock the back door the night before, or something. Maybe the babies have mastered unlocking the door, who knows. It didn't dawn on me that it may be something else! Of course, the next morning, the situation repeated itself and I found all three of them out in our backyard with no shoes on, frolicking in the wet mud and leaves and grass. Did I mention that Kian is an avid leaf surfer? He's very good at it, let me tell you! This called for another bath of course! Then I went to check out the back door while my little people were safely strapped in their feeding chairs having lunch. I discovered that the door was opened, but still locked. Apparently, the house had settled, causing the door to not latch properly, leaving a huge loophole that my toddlers decided to jump on and take the opportunity to go exploring! Luckily, the same door has a keyed deadbolt on it, so I was able to lock it with the key and it stay shut. But, now, the babies have conned their Daddy into giving them all the old keys that he could find. I mean, how can you turn down three cherubic smiling faces all asking sweetly for car keys??? Now, everyone makes sure to bring their keys with them EVERYWHERE and when they think I am not looking, they try them in the back door lock! Thankfully, none of the keys will work, but how did they know to do all of this??? I have to be much more vigilant now that they are getting older and starting to grow up!
