How To Do the Dr 101

Posted by Vulnadia on Jul 12, 2009 at 08:07 PM I wasn't thinking when I made the triplet's three year checkup appointment. I wasn't thinking at all! I somehow managed to schedule them all together, but at a time when Bregon, my only available helper, would be at film camp. I didn't want to try my luck at getting it rescheduled, so I decided to give it a go on my own, knowing there would most likely be bloodwork involved, and even the possibility of shots. We all did well with Bregon's appointment the Friday before, so I sort of thought we could do this, sort of! Well I was on time for once, but it took a while to get everyone inside. Kian dragged behind, Kai went right on inside, and Vivienne tried to hold the door for us all and opened it on to her big toe. She howled, Kian joined in when I picked them both up as best as they would allow and took them inside. I sat Kian down on the floor next to the bead toy, Kai was already playing, and Vivienne continued screaming even after I hugged her and sat her in a chair. I had to sign in during all this, but somehow remembered to write the correct names and birthdate on the sign-in sheet. Everyone quieted down to play choo-choo train with the bead &wire toys. We even reread that magazine full of Beaudreaux's Butte Paste adds and I didn't even wince when the kids gave it their own pronunciation! Surprisingly, everyone was excited to go and visit the Doctor, so they all hopped up when their name was called and followed me like a bunch of baby ducks back to the back. Yep,for whatever reason, my kids find weighing traumatizing, probably because of the health unit, but that is just a guess. Somehow we got them to actually take off their shoes by asking them who's feet were the stinkiest...Kaiden wins that one by the way...hands down. Next it was time to see how tall we are. We all wore silly hats to measure our heads, and took turns laying down so the lady could draw a picture for us on the paper (measure us.) Then I got the news that there would be bloodwork involved, oh boy. Okay, I could do this. I asked the kids who wanted a sticker. Of course they all do because they equate it with tape, a hot commodity at my house. I told them we were going to go on a walk and get stickers for our fingers, and stickers for our shirts. They bought it and we managed to pass bloodwork 101 without any tears. Kaiden managed to open every closed door along that path and close them on the way back to our room. Next we found out what it feels like to have our arm inside a balloon, which was really super fun! (blood pressure cuffs are not an easy sell on 3yr olds!) We managed to get out without any shots this time! HOORAY! Nobody screamed, nobody cried. We actually passed Doctor 101 with flying colors for once!
